Mass Spectrometry – SSMI

ISIC’s Mass Spectrometry facility is equipped with 8 mass spectrometers covering a wide range of applications, from the analysis of small organic molecules to large biomolecules (DNA, polysaccharides, peptides, proteins…) and metals.

The platform includes 2 antennae on the sites of Lausanne and Sion, having complementary instruments and working all together to provide the best service to Users.

The goal of this service is to provide high quality mass spectrometry analysis. Ionization techniques include Chemical Ionization (CI), electron impact (EI), Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI), Electrospray (ESI), Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI), Atmospheric Pressure Photo-Ionization (APPI) and Induced Coupled Plasma (ICP). Analyzer types include electrical field based analyzers such as Quadrupole, Ion Trap, Time-of-Flight (TOF) and Orbitrap. The service provides accurate mass measurements within the 1-3 ppm mass accuracy, tandem mass spectrometry measurements (MS/MS and MSn) for structural studies, as well as quantification studies by GC-MS or LC-HRMS. In addition, the platform is equipped with ICP-MS for metal analysis, performed at the MS Lab in Sion.  Our facility has also acquired strong expertise in Top-down analysis of intact proteins for protein identification as well as for determination of modifications sites on proteins. Fragmentation for tandem mass spectrometry is performed either by CID/HCD on a QExactive (protein mode) or by ETD on a LTQ-Orbitrap Elite instrument.

The service is mostly dedicated to academic research groups but commercial service is also welcome. New users are requested to contact Dr. Laure Menin in order to discuss their project and specific needs. Two open-access instruments (ESI-MS and MALDI-MS) are available after a training provided by our Team. These instruments can be booked online (http://isic-reservation.epfl.ch/).
