The XRD facility of ISIC is currently equipped with 8 instruments, providing a wide range of measurement conditions on single crystals and different kinds of polycrystalline samples (powders, thin films, devices…).  Powder and  thin film diffraction is performed at the XRD lab of ISIC Valais in Sion.We provide service and scientific support to ISIC and EPFL research groups, external academics as well as industry service (under non-disclosure agreement) .

New users are requested to contact Dr. Pascal Schouwink in order to discuss the specific needs. Users wanting to measure on their own are trained on open access machines upon request and upon completion can reserve these instruments online ((http://isic-reservation.epfl.ch/). For users not wanting to measure independently, as well as non-open access instrumentation and special setups, assistance is provided (please contact Dr. Pascal Schouwink). A course on theory and practice of XRD is organized within the doctoral school of chemistry, open to PhD students and PostDocs. A number of services is offered by the Platform concerning experiment and data analysis:

The single crystal X-ray service of Lausanne carries out full crystal structure determination and analysis for EPFL and external users. CIF-files for deposition in databases and submission of publications are completed. We are always open to discuss the specific demands of our users that may go beyond standard measurements. Regarding any questions concerning the usage of our facilities in Lausanne, you are welcome to contact Dr. Rosario Scopelliti or Dr. Pascal Schouwink. Beyond our facilities in Lausanne and Sion, scientific support is provided in designing and carrying out more sophisticated experiments at synchrotron (and neutron) facilities (see links).

  • Crystal structure determination from single crystals and powder samples (provided the sample quality is sufficient).
  • Single crystal refinement and Rietveld refinement (powders).
  • Sample screening.
  • Quantitative phase analysis.
  • Microstructure analysis (crystallite size, strain, texture).
  • In-situ studies under variable conditions (temperature, atmosphere…).
  • Advice and collaboration/support on Synchrotron experiments.
